Sarah Laing

Where are you from? I'm South African by birth but currently live just outside of Toronto, Ontario.

What’s your current position? Freelance writer and editor.

What did you want to be when you were a kid? Barring a phase when I wanted to be a pathologist circa grade four, I've always wanted to be a writer of some sort.

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received? "Pull all of the levers available to you," which is essentially about the importance of being proactive rather than reactive or waiting for action or opportunities to magically float your way.

What has been your biggest career highlight so far? The best part of being a journalist is getting to talk to all sorts of fascinating people, so those conversations in aggregate are a collective highlight for me.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not writing for ROOM? I love reading, long walks listening to Taylor Swift and conducting endless field research to find the perfect chocolate chip cookie.

What other publications have you written for? The Globe and Mail, the Toronto Star, The Kit, among others.
